Debunking Skincare Myths

SKINCARE MYTHS VS FACTS

The internet is packed with myths around skincare. So much so, it can be difficult to tell what’s fact and what’s fiction.

In this blog post, we set the record straight on some of the most common misnomers to ensure you’re armed with the right information to make your skincare choices.

1. MYTH - Oily and acne-prone skin doesn't need moisturising.

FACT - To put it simply, all skin types need moisturiser as part of the daily skincare routine because moisturiser provides both hydration and moisture needed for healthy skin.

The thought of applying moisturiser to already shiny skin may not be very appealing, but failing to do so can make the skin dry out and causes oil glands to go into overdrive, producing more oil and ultimately causing spots.

Check out our Revitalising Moisturiser, which ticks all the skincare boxes.

2. MYTH - Only teenagers get acne.

FACT - Acne is the most common skin disease, with over 30% of adults experiencing it at some point in their lives, and about 95% of people aged 11 to 30 are affected by it.

Genetics play a big part, with studies suggesting that nearly 80% of acne is due to certain inherited genes. Other factors contributing to acne are excess oil production, clogged pores, bacteria, and inflammation.

3. MYTH - Eating junk food won't cause spots.

FACTS- Long story short, blemishes and spots can be triggered by unhealthy foods. Foods high in omega-6 fats, sugars, and carbohydrates can all fuel breakouts and aggravate existing skin conditions like acne. Fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, contain antioxidants that are beneficial to the skin.

As we've mentioned, acne is a disease that can often be down to genetics, so if you cut all unhealthy foods out of your diet, it's not to say that acne will go away, but it could help.

4. MYTH - You only need to wear sun cream on sunny/hot days.

FACT - Wearing sunscreen daily is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin’s health and appearance. Whatever the weather, UV, UVA and ultraviolet radiation in the atmosphere can penetrate the skin and cause significant damage from accelerated ageing to cancerous lesions.

5. MYTH - Using an exfoliant every day is good for your skin.

FACT- Exfoliating is an important part of any skincare routine as it helps remove dirt, grime and dead skin cells. However, exfoliating too often can damage your skin's barrier and strip your skin of its natural moisture, causing the oil glands to go into overdrive.

We recommend using our Deep Cleansing Exfoliant  2-3 times per week, but you should make a call based your skin type and its sensitivities. Find out more about the benefits of using an exfoliant here.
