The Benefits Of Having A Routine


When you step back and really think about your day, it can be overwhelming, right? Up early, work, hitting the gym, or maybe a run or bike ride, getting the steps in, hitting the calorie burn count, cooking, kids, housework… it’s a lot! The buildup of all the to-do’s and knowing that they are there waiting for you adds weight to our shoulders and the pressure can sometimes be too much. A heavy load can also cause stress, depression, insomnia, and other health-related problems, giving us something else to deal with.

So, what can we do? What can we introduce to our daily life that will make the whole thing run smoother? We’ll still have the chores to do but how can we make sure they don’t influence us mentally? Routine, that’s how. Routine can sound a little boring, like it’s no fun, you just do the same thing all the time, repeatedly, following the same path. But let’s talk about that path.

What if that path took you to a place of comfort, a place where your mind could concentrate on the tasks at hand, the jobs you needed to complete, but could also free you of the crushing weight and pressure that comes with the swamp of the hustle and bustle of life? What if following that path gave you structure, allowing you to make the most of your time and establish healthy habits, which can be so important when areas of your life feel uncertain? When you are submerged in strain and stress, what if that path leads you to a place of calm where you can gather your thoughts and have the time to think? The path sounds good!

Creating and following a routine can be invigorating, it can make you feel powerful! Research has proven that having a structure and a routine can play an important role in ensuring your mental health is on the right track and can help with anxiety and stress. Focussing on the things you can control and managing your own behaviours will make your life so much easier to handle day to day.

It doesn’t have to be difficult.

• Waking up early and exercising, start your day off right. Maybe take a fresh air walk in nature.

• Eating healthily at set times throughout the day.

• Set realistic goals and stay positive.

• Make a list, write down the days jobs and take pleasure in ticking them off when you’ve accomplished them.

• Get to bed early. Poor sleep worrying about what you didn’t get done today and what you must do tomorrow is not good for your body or your mind. Without a decent night’s sleep, you’re always playing catch up with no energy for what’s ahead. Maybe do a bit of meditation, take a hot bath, and switch off.
